“Children are our future and we must take care of them with maximum effort.”

-Naomi Campbell

On October 1, 2011 I had the privilege and honor to volunteer my time to the fight against childhood obesity by helping out Louie’s Kids at the inaugural Slim Down the South Celebrity Softball Challenge. It was heartwarming to see so many support the fight with me.

According to Wikipedia, 74.6% of Americans are overweight and 15-25% of children are overweight. Obesity is overly destructive to the body and can lead to many health complications including early onset of Type II Diabetes, Cancers, Sleep Apnea, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Joint Problems, and Fibromyalgia, as well as many more.

The conditions listed above can alter hormone releases, lead to psychological issues, and wreak havoc on the body’s normal functions and muscular tone. Massage therapy has been proven to help relieve chronic pain in muscles and joints which reduces swelling and improves circulation allowing those who are obese to exercise to improve their condition and maintain a better metabolic rate. In addition the calming effect of massage therapy, it can also help to regulate proper hormone release, which gives a more positive and euphoric effect to the obese client. This in turn, promotes a better lifestyle and a healthier outlook.

It is true that Massage can assist in the fight against obesity, but it is only a small part. We, as a society, need to work together to inform those who may not know any better (i.e. children and their parents) about the healthier options in diet, activities, and lifestyle choices; all leading to a happier and healthier future for us all.

I have supported Louie’s Kids now for over 8 years and will continue to do so until the battle is won. Preventative health care is a great way to move, feel, & BE better. Please take time to help yourself, others, and especially the children in this great fight against obesity that we face today.

Get educated about better meal and food options, exercise and consider all other helpful ways that can fight obesity.
